The people who say shit like this probably haven’t played many games. Because the option to play as a female character has been there for decades. It’s not uncommon in the slightest.

And the inverse, the people who say all gamers hate female characters have probably never played games or met gamers either.

Boon Cotter works at Naughty Dog, who is releasing the newest The Last of Us.

People have issues with the marketing. And as a lesbian, so do I. Because something like a third of the trailer is dedicated to Ellie awkwardly flirting with, then kissing, another girl. Which is likely a minor or irrelevant aspect to the entire game, rather than an overarching plot.

And people are upset that the game is now starring Ellie and not Joel, who was a fan favorite.

They’re using social justice to shield themselves from criticism. They’re using the fact that Ellie’s a lesbian to hide from anything anyone says about their game they don’t like.

It’s such a blatant fucking misrepresentation because people are fucking hyped for Beyond Good and Evil 2, which has a female protagonist. And people seemed interested in Sea of Solitude, which stars a girl.

These fucking cancerous people need to be excised from the industry. I’m so sick of these ideologues shitting on gamers and trying to push the “gamerbro” label on people.

Fuck off, Boon Cotter. And I’ll go as far as to say fuck Naughty Dog too.

It actually has a lot more ties, as fans have been digging. Ellie has an inert, but still transmittable form of cordyceps, and cordyceps in the The Last of Us universe can be transmitted by saliva. Reasonably so, it seems there’s more to it than just gaining brownie points, which wouldn’t do much either. Naughty Dog is possibly planning something deeper i.e. Ellie possibly infects the town, fireflies are cultists, as Ellie says “she’ll kill them all.” Basing something like that off of a 2 minute cutscene is odd.

They really arent using that. Most peoples criticisms are either blatant bigotry or not understanding what a trailer is.

Have you forgotten about the whole gamerbro fits caused over Battlefield V? Or people saying Ellie can’t fight in TLOU, etc. There has been a lot of that toxic attitude spreading.

Okay, I want you to go on the tweet Boon put up himself. There are toooons of gamerbro replies. That, itself, is only a fragment of the comments on YT, /v/ etc. Ignoring that toxicity has led to movements like GamerGate, allowing it to build up without challenge.

1. That has absolutely no bearing on her showing the romance scene because if this was the case, they be able to show it within the game’s opening moments. They did not need to dedicate as much time as they did to romance as they did in the trailer. If this was a heterosexual couple under the same premise, it would’ve been just as stupid.

2. Incorrect. I’ve seen plenty of actual criticism because showing so much romance is a red flag for a trailer, as there should be other things a trailer should be showing. The fact that people can’t criticize this without being called bigots kinda proves the point.

3. It is not ‘gamerbro’ to call out a blatant historical untruth, which is what Battlefield V’s situation was. I agree with the criticism. Disabled women were not on the front line of WW2 as snipers.

4. Gamergate was not a toxic movement. I was part of Gamergate. It was about ethics in gaming. Quit attempting to create this ‘gamerbro’ narrative that has been spun out in the last few months and stop using it to erase everyone who is not a straight, white, cis man from the criticisms of these games and gaming as a whole.

A few weeks ago I went to a Pride Club Meeting for the first time. I’d just gotten the guts to do it. I introduced myself a bisexual. Later in the meeting I was called “another questioning lesbian”.

Doctrines of “everyday sexism” are “rape culture” are having a “debilitating” effect on girls’ confidence, according to Dr Joanna Williams, a lecturer in higher education at Kent University.

Institutions which should be promoting women’s rights - such as schools, universities and feminist campaigners - are now doing more harm than good, she argues.

In a new book, titled Women vs Feminism: Why We All Need Liberating from the Gender Wars, Dr Williams say that the breed of feminism which is considered “fashionable” nowadays involves telling young women that casual misogyny and sexual harassment are rife.

“I do think that there is one particular feminist narrative that seems to dominate in education,” Dr Williams told The Sunday Telegraph.

“But it is increasingly out of touch with reality. Girls are doing so much better at school than boys, and yet we are having people like The Everyday Sexism Projectare coming into schools sends out a message of: ‘just you wait, there are real difficulties ahead’.”

She said that if girls are instilled with a mindset of victimhood at a young age, it can set them back later in life. “When women go out into the world of work and experience obstacles, rather than persevering they think ‘oh these are the insurmountable barriers I was told about’.“

The Everyday Sexism Project was set up in 2012 by Laura Bates, as a way to highlight casual misogyny by publishing online a catalogue of women’s experiences of harassment.

Dr Williams said that the narrative continues at university where students are told that there is a “rape culture” or some kind of “epidemic” of sexual assault on campus.

“It is very difficult for women to present themselves as powerful, strong and capable if they think they need to be wary and anxious,“ she said.

“So if someone pays you a compliment [you are told] that is outrageous. You are told it is not a joke, it is a sexual attack, it is “everyday sexism” or a micro-aggression.”

She went on: “It can also be tragic. I gave a talk at my university and a young woman came up to me at the end and says she doesn’t leave her room after dark.

“When you teach girls they are victims they believe it. But this is not in keeping with reality and it can become quite debilitating.”

Dr Williams said that this narrative of feminism is outdated since girls now consistently outperform boys at school and more women have been going on to higher education than men for the past generation.

“If you go back 25 or 30 years ago it really was the case that girls were not doing as well as boys and didn’t have the same education opportunities,” she said.

“You had very good reasons for wanting to challenge gender stereotypes in schools.” Dr Williams said that instead, feminism should now be presented in a more positive light since “pretty much for the first time there is nothing holding them back in their career”.

Writing in Women vs Feminism, she said that today’s dominant feminism narrative “clearly espouses one idea above all others: that women are disadvantaged and oppressed; routine victims of everyday sexism, casual misogyny and the workings of patriarchy”.

She argues that the better women’s lives become, “the harder it seems that a new generation of feminists must try to justify their purpose through uncovering ever more obscure problems”.

We learned about this in class recently. It’s called stereotype threat. When told of a stereotype that applies to you, whether it’s good or bad (blondes are dumb, black people are good at sports, etc.), you’re more likely to conform more to it. Lots of studies have confirmed this.

An elementary school teacher did a demonstration (it wasn’t ethical AT ALL but that isn’t the point). She divided her class into two groups: students with brown eyes and those with blue eyes. She told them all that people with blue eyes are smarter and overall better, and that people with brown eyes are stupid. She then gave them a test. The students with blue eyes did way better than those with brown.

The next day, she told them she got it mixed up. Students with brown eyes were amazing and those with blue eyes couldn’t do anything right. She gave them another test and the students with brown eyes did way better that time.

When told you’re inadequate, you tend to act the part. Stop telling women, minorities, and whomever else that it’s so hard to succeed! You’re making it increasingly true.
